Russell County, Virginia

Established January 2, 1786 from a section of Washington County. L.P. Summers, a Washington County historian later wrote, "Washington County lost a great extent of country and many valuable citizens when Russell County was formed." Named for Colonel William Russell, the county later formed the counties of Wise, Lee, Tazewell, and Scott. William Russell fought in the early attempt to settle the area that would later become Kentucky where he lost his eldest son during an ambush from Native Americans. In 1774 her participated in the Battle of Point Pleasant where he was promoted to Colonel. After being held prisoner by the British, he rejoined the fight and was eventually promoted so Brigandier General, cammanding the 5th Virginia Regiment. There are two (2) counties named after William Russell and one named after his son, who was also named William Russell.
