The Facts

Are you or is someone you know affected by diabetes? Diabetes is a growing concern in the United States and in our Appalachian region. It affects nearly 26 million people (8.3% of the nation's population). Another 79 million are estimated to have pre-diabetes or be at risk. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death and is a major cause of health problems like heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and foot and leg problems. Risks differ across groups of people, but high diabetes rates have been found for those living in Appalachia and numbers continue to grow.
